The world today, is ever-changing and becoming more and more competitive. Things that are relevant today, may not necessarily be relevant tomorrow. Nowadays, society places a much greater demand for people with specialised knowledge and skill sets as well as self-awareness.

The main reason you send your kids to school is for them to be well-equipped with enough knowledge, so that they can be ready for life beyond school. Yes, a lot can be learned from inside of a classroom, but learning is an ever continuing process in every person’s life and it is always good to expand one’s horizons beyond the confines of a classroom. Learning outside the classroom can help enrich a child’s learning experience by bringing to light, real-life applications of theories that they are studying from school. Hence, it is very important for children to keep learning and experiencing new things even after school. Here are just a few examples of what your child can do in order to enhance their learning skills outside of the classroom.

Participate in Sports

Sports can provide a myriad of advantages for children apart from physical activity. When children take part in sports, it helps them develop better self-esteem and confidence, which encourages them to excel academically and foster their social skills. It will also instil the benefits of practice and goal-setting in them.

The first benefit of playing sports is of course physical activity! Rather than spending most of their time playing video games or watching television, sports can provide children with a chance to exercise in order to stay healthy.

Sports can also help kids sharpen their social skills and foster life-long friendships. Team sports help children learn how to cooperate with other people in order to achieve a good outcome. The kids would be motivated and encouraged by parents and coaches which will benefit their self-esteem and self-confidence. They would also have faith in their own abilities and drive themselves to do better. A big part of sports is constructive criticism, which would help children grow beneficially when they learn to accept such criticism.

Kids who take part in sports would usually excel in academics also. By learning the principles of hard work and dedication through participating in sports, they can apply it to their studies as well.

Participating in sports can later become a habit that will last throughout their lifetime. It would also instil a sense of discipline in them into maintaining their fitness and become more aware of a healthy diet. It would also be beneficial if parents and coaches encourage more healthy living and become positive role models for the children to exemplify.

Going on Field Trips

Field trips also give students learning experiences away from the inside of a classroom. They can be trips to the museum, zoo, nature centres, fire stations and many more! It allows them to experience a more holistic, integrated picture of knowledge outside the confines of a classroom, which usually teaches in a more textual and abstract way. It helps foster enthusiasm for learning, provide a real-world context and expose students to a range of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math careers. It will help nurture their critical thinking, problem-solving skills and help them become better decision makers.

Children will be able to experience a more hands-on and interactive learning manner while on field trips. A good example would be Science Museums, which usually have interactive displays that children can play with in order for them to understand scientific concepts being exhibited in a fun and engaging way! Nature centres, zoos and botanical gardens allow kids to see animals and plant life up close, in places where children can touch displays, like petting zoos and interactive computer programs.

Field trips would also allow kids to have a break from the routine of learning in classrooms. It helps get them excited to learn and they are able to spend the day in a unique learning environment and is able to finish a lesson on the subject being taught after the field trip. Field trips allow for a different way of learning which can propel children to succeed whether they are kinetic, auditory or visual learners. Students will be able to decide what they learn and the way they learn it.

Children will be more exposed to different ideas, professions and opportunities once they go beyond the classroom. Field trips can spark new interests and passions and may ignite a hidden desire in a child which would encourage them to try new endeavours and pursue dreams that were previously unconsidered.

On a community service trip, children can learn about how to benefit others in the community and the outside world. They will learn to appreciate hard labour and can instil a laborious attitude within them.

Overall, field trips can lead to greater achievements in all subjects. By experiencing the real-life application of the knowledge that they gain from school, children will be able to appreciate and understand the relevance and importance of what is being taught to them.

Learning is a never-ending process and can be done in a myriad of ways. In order for your child to have a more holistic development and keep ahead of the curve in the future, be sure to allow them to explore the outside world for themselves so they will start to think more independently.
