Asians British Parliamentary Debate Competition
SKIS students put up a good performance at the recent first Asians British Parliamentary Debate competition, organised by the Cambridge Union. The team competed with sponsored College and Pre-University teams from Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
Anabelle Chin (7 Eta) and Chin Jia Hang (10 Eta) formed one of three SKDUDU teams and was the only Under 13 team to progress from the preliminary rounds into the final 16 teams.
SKDUDU was the only Malaysian school to feature in the top 16; our two teams that tied as the top scoring Malaysian team were:
- Gan Jia Yi and Kelly Pua Hsien Ren (10 Kappa) and
- Tan Sein Jone (11 Delta) and Ji Fang Qing (11 Gamma)
Two of these debaters will be chosen to compete in the Cambridge Union Schools Debating competition and represent Malaysia in Cambridge on 18th February 2017.
Three of our squad members were named as Best Speaker within their age groups: Ilyas Aqil (9 Delta) ranked first, while Michael Yap (9 Delta) and Jia Hang took joint third place.
This is certainly good exposure for a young club like SKDUDU, under the coaching of Ms Keana Reinu, whose unique experience as a competitive debater and trainer, as well as competition judge provides a distinct advantage.
Ms Keana was a Deputy Chief Adjudicator at the World Schools Debating Championship in Germany this year.
Congratulations and well done to all SKDUDU group members.
