    Melanie Martin joined BXCL International School in August 2022.
    Before joining our school, she was the Pastoral Secondary Senior Coordinator for One World International School Singapore where she was able to pioneer and build many of the school’s Pastoral and Academic programmes. Melanie also worked as the Middle School Coordinator, developing the whole school student management system. The school successfully attained IBDP accreditation and EduTrust certification within its inaugural year.
    Before moving to Singapore, Melanie was Head of Year at Compass International School, Doha. She helped build a positive school environment by developing the school’s Pastoral programme and embedding the school’s culture of inclusion and diversity.
    Melanie’s first teaching career began in England where she taught science. She is very passionate about the subject and has consistently shown her students how the wonders of science are intertwined with the world around us.

    Joshua Sussex is an internationally experienced senior leader with over a decade of educational leadership across the UK, Egypt, Vietnam, and China. He has held senior roles in premium British international schools, including Malvern College and Wycombe Abbey, and is recognised for building strong culture, systems, and staff alignment in complex international contexts.

    Joshua has led whole-school strategic initiatives across curriculum coherence, behaviour, safeguarding, and accreditation, including leadership of COBIS inspection processes and the design of data-informed culture and behaviour frameworks. He is known as a trusted, board- and parent-facing leader with a calm, values-led approach to school improvement.

    Academically, Joshua holds an MA in International Education (Distinction), a BA (Hons.), and PGCE with QTS in Physical Education, and is currently completing a Doctor of Education (EdD) at the University of Bath, where his research focuses on culturally mediated leadership for leaders in international schools. He has also recently commenced postgraduate study in International Affairs with King’s College London, further strengthening his understanding of global education, governance, and policy.

    Ian has been in education for over 25 years, beginning his career in teaching in the UK Primary sector where he taught for 16 years, 8 years as a Headteacher in three Primary schools prior to moving internationally. Ian completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in 2007 and is currently undertaking his MBA through Heriot-Watt University. His first degree was a four-year Bachelor of Education with Mathematics from Liverpool Hope University College.

    Ian joins XCL International School, Penang (BXCL) having spent the last four years working in China as a school leader in two of the Nord Anglia bilingual schools. Ian was the International Head of Primary in the largest of the Nord Anglia bilingual schools, NACIS, in Shanghai where alongside his co-Headteacher he led 1300 students aged 6-11 before moving to Nord Anglia Nantong as the Acting International Principal.

    Prior to moving to China, Ian was at one of the Middle East’s leading international schools in Jordan, the International Community School (ICS), where alongside his role as Primary Headteacher he was also the line manager for their world class inclusion and counselling teams. Ian was also the whole school designated safeguarding lead and worked with the department for education in Jordan in developing policies and procedures which were designed to ensure the safety of all students accessing education in and across Jordan.

    ICS was three nominated three times for International School of the Year during the time Ian was a member of the school leadership team, winning in 2018 in the area of Inclusion, nominated twice for its work on safeguarding.

    Ian’s first international headship was in Kenya where he led a growing Pre-Prep and Prep school in Nairobi.

    Ian has led schools through inspections under the Ofsted framework in the UK in addition to British School Overseas (BSO) inspections during his time internationally. During his leadership in Jordan, Ian was the chair of the steering committee which guided ICS through CIS (Council of International Schools) accreditation. He has also completed the training to be part of the COBIS (Council of British International Schools) Patrons Peer Accreditation teams.

    As an educator and school leader, Ian believes very much in a child-centred approach to learning. He puts his students first considering their academic needs are met but ensuring that as a school the teachers also understand that to attain and make progress they need to cater effectively for the child’s emotional and physical needs.

    Jiro Takahashi is the Group Chief Financial Officer at XCL Education, having joined in April 2024. He oversees the Group’s financial strategy, including the development of financial and tax strategies, directing strategic business plans, and enhancing financial and management reporting systems. He is also responsible for maintaining key relationships and leading the finance team to support business growth and operational excellence across all markets.

    Jiro brings substantial financial leadership experience across the Asia Pacific region, specialising in corporate finance. Before joining XCL Education, he was the Chief Financial Officer for OCS Group UK, a global facility services provider, where he led the finance function across Asia Pacific, initiating strategies that significantly enhanced the region’s profitability and strategic positioning. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for Thailand and corporate development for Asia Pacific at Laureate International Universities, overseeing the company’s financial strategy and contributing to the financial success of Laureate and its institutions. Earlier in his career, Jiro held multiple finance roles of increasing responsibilities with Yum Brands in the US and Asia Pacific.

    With over 20 years of experience in financial management, Jiro holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from The University of Texas at Austin. He has a proven track record of leading financial transformations, implementing robust financial controls, and aligning financial practices with organisational goals.

    Glyn joined our school as Director of Sport in 2021 where he has taken on multiple roles throughout the school, now currently Deputy Head of Secondary (Academics) in 2023.
    After many years working in the UK as a Teacher, Governor, Academic and Pastoral Leader in schools across the south coast of England.
    Glyn took his first international role as Executive Head of Physical Education at Compass International School Doha in early 2014. During his time in the Middle East at CISD, Glyn was awarded the Leader of the Year award, awarded across all 42 Nord Anglia Schools at the time.
    In 2016 he moved on to new challenges this time in Singapore at One World International School. A very different challenge where he got to establish and build the foundations of new year groups, subjects and whole school activities. This resulted in taking a school from initially 150 students to over 1800 students and two campuses in 4 short years.
    Glyn has a passion for learning like all good teachers and his focus on continual professional development will be further enhanced by the completion of a masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Bath in 2023. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science from the University of Chichester, and holds QTS also completed at University of Chichester.

    Prior to joining XCL, she works in Malaysia Bursa Security listed companies and audit firm. She is responsible for school’s financial & accounting management, Corporate financial regulation & best practice.

    QUALIFICATION

    The Head of Enrichment & Wider Learning is a newly created role this year, with a focus on Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), enriching trips, and expanding learning experiences beyond the confines of the classroom.

    In 2021, Joe embarked on his journey into International Teaching, relocating to Malaysia. His role at the school has now transitioned from Cluster Director for Sport, to taking on this new role, bringing to it a range of experience and commitment to holistic education.

    A sports enthusiast from a young age, Joe’s love for physical activity led him into coaching, where he discovered his passion for mentoring and motivating others. He decided to further his skills through teacher training in Plymouth, earning a Bachelor of Education degree. After teaching for two years working in a school in Cornwall, Joe returned to his hometown of Bristol, where he made a significant impact at a comprehensive secondary school during his 5 years in post. His commitment to student welfare led him to specialise in a middle leadership role as Head of House and eventually Assistant Headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead.

    At the heart of Joe’s philosophy lies a genuine desire to offer students enriching experiences beyond traditional learning.     Gilles Mahe is the Group CEO of XCL Education. Gilles has worked in leadership roles across a multitude of sectors in Asia since 2000 and has spent ~20 years leading organizations and managing operations in Asia Pacific. He brings with him deep experience managing large service-oriented organizations, where he had the privilege of building diverse teams, working with passionate people, and nurturing a culture of collaboration and excellence.

    Gilles has ~7 years of extensive experience working in the education sector. Gilles was the Thailand & Myanmar CEO of Laureate International Universities, the world’s leading higher education provider, where he built and expanded Laureate’s activities in Southeast Asia. As the CEO, Gilles was instrumental in expanding Laureate’s presence in new geographies, launching innovative offline and online programs, turning around universities, scaling existing universities, and expanding the reputation and credibility of the overall group in Southeast Asia. As a father of three, he is a firm believer in the transformative power of education and the significant roles that schools play in shaping the lives of students and preparing them for what comes next.

    Prior to XCL Education, Gilles was the Asia Pacific CEO for OCS Group, the world’s largest family-owned facilities management services company. At OCS, he played a pivotal role in building out the leadership team, executing the commercial transformation of the business, and acquiring & integrating other facilities management businesses. He has also served as the Managing Director for Asia and Vice President for APAC of Sodexo Group, a Fortune Global 500 company that is the leading provider of Food and Facilities Management services.

    Gilles holds dual Post-graduate degrees in Business & Finance and Philosophy from the University of Paris-La Sorbonne in France.

    QUALIFICATION

    Marcel Van Miert is a Senior Advisor to TPG in Southeast Asia. Marcel has almost 3 decades of extensive experience working exclusively in the education sector.

    Prior to TPG, Marcel served as the Executive Chairman of Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) for ~8 years. Prior to VAS, Marcel spent 4 years as the Group CEO of WCL Group, a PE-backed school chain now part of Nord Anglia, and 3 years as the Managing Director of the Schools Division at Nord Anglia.

    Marcel has also served several other education companies in multiple capacities including Sommet Education (a network of hospitality schools), VUS (English Language Training Centers), EBS London (UK’s first private accredited Business School), INK Education, Sri KDU Schools, and Europreneur Consultants.

    Marcel received a Bachelor’s in Arts from Regent’s University London and MBA from Henley Business School in the UK.

    PGCE, University of Sunderland BSc. (Hons.) Environmental Science, University of Plymouth

    Lucy Brown joined XCL International School in 2023 and has been working in international schools in Malaysia for 10 years. She began her journey at Garden International School in Kuala Lumper before spending 5 years in Kuantan, Pahang.

    In her previous school, Lucy played a key role in the implementation of the International Primary Curriculum and created detailed curriculum mapping documentation for the whole primary school. She holds a BSc. (Hons) in Environmental Science from the University of Plymouth, UK as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education from the University of Sunderland, UK.

    Lucy believes that communication and collaboration are vital in all aspects of the school community and made a significant contribution to building relationships with parents in prior roles. Her Year 6 classroom is often noisy as students work together and learn from each other developing the skills they need to thrive in the real world.

    Duncan Grice joined XCL International School, Penang (BXCL), formerly known as GEMS International School, Pearl City, Penang, in April 2020, after being a Consultant Principal with GEMS Education.

    Prior to joining the school, he was the founding Headmaster of Malvern College Egypt, establishing a school with a clear emphasis on learning and putting students at the centre of every decision. Duncan led the College Leadership Team in the start-up years with responsibility for all areas of the development timeline. The College achieved an A* report from Malvern College UK in its first Quality Assurance inspection.

    Before moving to Egypt, Duncan was the founding Deputy Head of College/Head of Junior School at Dulwich College Suzhou, China. He was chair of the steering committee which guided DSCZ through CIS accreditation, making the school one of the youngest schools ever to be awarded this prestigious international stamp of approval.

    Duncan first taught overseas at the British International School Jakarta, Indonesia in 2000. There he was the KS2 Coordinator with responsibility for sixteen classes and member of the Primary SLT. Duncan was a member of the steering committee which saw the school accredited as a full member of the Council of International Schools.

    Prior to moving to Jakarta, Duncan was Head of Year 6 and teacher governor at New Bradwell Combined School in Milton Keynes in the UK.

    Duncan holds a MA in Education from the University of Bath, a B.A. (Hons) History/American Studies from St John’s College York. He also holds a PGCE from the University of Wales. Additionally, Duncan has been a registered ISI school inspector.

    QUALIFICATION

    Anthony is the Chief Executive Officer of XCL Education Malaysia. Anthony completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Christ Church, University of Oxford. After leaving Oxford, Anthony worked in the City of London in public, media and analyst relations. A passion for English Literature and life-long learning led him to being asked to work first as a teacher as part of the reforms at a school in Bolton and then to Trinity College, University of Cambridge to train as an English teacher in 2002.

    He has worked at a number of schools in Cambridgeshire, England, including pastoral leadership and leading the internationally renowned English and media faculty across the Parkside Federation of academies in Cambridge. Anthony joined the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) in 2010 to support the improvement of Nene Park Academy, where he worked as Assistant Principal leading on the development of the sixth form, literacy, English as an additional language, special needs and latterly as the Vice Principal with responsibility for the curriculum, timetable and student achievement throughout the academy. In July 2014, Anthony was appointed as Principal of Stamford Welland Academy with the brief to deliver the ‘Stamford Free School’ vision. During his time here, the school secured its best examination results and Ofsted inspection judgment in its history. In September 2017, he became CMAT’s Executive Director of Education responsible for the quality assurance of all the academies and teacher professional development from initial teacher training to leadership succession planning and development.

    In February 2019, Anthony joined GEMS as the Principal of GEMS International School Tropicana Metropark, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Whilst completing a Masters with UCL Institute of Education, Anthony conducted research into and published on the teaching of literacy. He is a frequent conference speaker, presenting on school leadership and English teaching and editor of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ in the Cambridge University Press Cambridge School Shakespeare series. Anthony believes in a whole education striving for academic excellence and great examination results, whist providing the experiences and building the character skills that student need to thrive in learning, work and life. In his spare time, Anthony enjoys travel, film, theatre, music, singing, running, and exercise.

    QUALIFICATION

    Tunku Ali Redhauddin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz, a graduate of both the University of Cambridge and Harvard University, is Chairman of Marlborough College, Malaysia; founding trustee and Chairman of Teach for Malaysia; and Pro-Chancellor at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia.

    In 2013, he was recognised as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Previously, he worked at both McKinsey & Company and Khazanah Nasional Berhad, and he currently holds other board and advisory roles at several corporations and non-profit entities including TPG Capital Asia.

    Wan Hafiz Hamzah bin Wan Hussien

    QUALIFICATION

    En. Wan Hafiz Hamzah Bin Wan Hussien is a Senior Advisor to TPG Capital. He started his career with CIMB Investment Bank in 2004 where he experienced roles in the Group CEO’s Office, Investment Banking and a stint in Indonesia with CIMB Niaga.
