Dear Students, Parents and Friends of SIKG,
We have been reviewing our student attendance procedures this week and it is pleasing to see that we have many students with 100% attendance since the start of term. A special mention for Year 6 who currently have an average attendance of 98%!
The relationship between school attendance and success
A student’s school attendance is unsurprisingly one of the best predictors of academic success. Pupils with good attendance – above 95% – are more likely to achieve IGCSE success.
A research report published by the UK government in March this year showed that “pupils with 95-100% attendance were 1.6 times more likely to achieve the expected outcome in reading, writing and maths than pupils with 90-95% attendance and 2.4 times more likely than pupils with 85-90% attendance.”
Of course, absence resulting from serious or contagious illness cannot be avoided and children should remain at home in these circumstances but when we compound the impact shown above across multiple years of schooling, it is clear to see the impact just a few missed days each term can have on a student’s chances of success.
Partnership with Grace Community Services
We were visited for assembly this week by Mr. Saravanan Nagapan from Grace Community Services. Following the assembly, we discussed how we can partner with the charity to support their mission of offering a “helping hand to the needy by providing shelter to the homeless and food for the hungry” as well as other essential support for people suffering hardship. Further information on how our students can get involved in initiatives such as volunteering at soup kitchens and setting up food, clothing and toy collections for children in need can be found in the writeup under "A Morning With Grace Community Services".
Students’ Birthday Celebrations – no food deliveries please
We request that parents do not send food for your child’s classmates to be consumed at school. Although very generous it is important that we are respectful of parents’ preferences for their children not eat certain foods, while many of our children also have food allergies. Should you wish to celebrate your child’s birthday by sending something for classmates to enjoy, please only send a small individually wrapped cake that can be sent home with the children and eaten with their parent’s consent. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
School Advisory Board
The SAB acts as a critical friend to the school and performers governance duties such as safeguarding and academic overview.
As existing SAB members’ children grow older, we are now short on lower Primary school representation on the board. I would like to encourage parents of children in EYFS to Year 4 in particular, to contact me should you be interested in finding out more about becoming an SAB member. You may contact me directly at [email protected]
Thank you to the parents who joined this week’s SAB meeting.
Mental Health Awareness Week
We have a range of activities, led by our School Counsellor Ms. Cheryl Kong next week to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Head of Secondary Interviews
Interviews for our new Head of Secondary will be held at the school and online on Monday September 29th. We have shortlisted five candidates and hope to make an announcement soon on the replacement for Mr. Narish, who relocates to Penang from January 26.
Stay Tuned: School Production - Alice in Wonderland
Thanks to our Drama Teacher Ms. Trudy Rowe, she has been preparing our
students for our production of Alice in Wonderland, to be presented in March
2026. We look forward in anticipation to this one-of-a-kind performance!
Regards,
Rhys Thomas,
Campus Principal
