Dear Parents
Wednesday of this week was United Nations World Children’s Day and an important chance
to reflect on the inequality that exists across the world. Many children are not as lucky as
our students and are unable to access basic education. I paid a visit to the World Children’s
Day website (World Children’s Day | UNICEF) and discovered that, in fact, the situation is
improving and significant progress is being made to ensure primary and lower secondary
education to students throughout the world, where previously there was little availability. It
was nice to see some positive news given the deluge of negative stories in the media
recently. I would encourage you to visit the website and explore some of the resources
available for parents and children.
I also discovered that the future megatrends that will impact on our students’ lives will be
climate change, demographic shifts and technological advancement. I hope that by
engaging with our integrated studies curriculum and making sense of our challenging Big
Picture Questions, our Sri KDU students can become globally aware citizens and understand
that they have agency to make change happen and develop opportunities for others. As
educators, we are always making adaptations to how and what is taught in schools so we
can best prepare students for the future and, certainly, our use of technology is a strength
at Sri KDU Subang Jaya. I am also proud of how we have developed our enquiry-based
learning units to bring in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and examine topics that
are highly relevant to some of the issues raised in the UN World Children’s Day report.
I was lucky enough to work in different year groups this week and saw a lot of excitement
and enthusiasm around some of our topics. Year 4 were investigating the protection of
coral reefs in Malaysia and Year 6 were researching the cost of staying healthy and
healthcare. I look forward to seeing our primary school students presenting to other
students, teachers and parents at our unit showcases as we head towards the end of term.
Our student leaders took the initiative this week to celebrate World Children’s Day and raise
awareness of issues across the school. This included extra equipment in the playground and
a special lunch menu. We would like to thank SHF for the opportunity given to students
today to create their own menu, Our students voted enthusiastically for their favourite
foods, and the school caterers have responded with a thoughtful and inclusive menu. The
main feature of the menu was Japanese-themed meal, inspired by student interest in
exploring diverse cuisines. As always, we are fortunate to have staff willing to dedicate extra
time into developing opportunities for our students to experience leadership skills. I hope
that the experience at Sri KDU Subang Jaya will serve students well as they take on the
challenges that face future leaders.
On behalf of everyone at the school, I would like to wish you a pleasant weekend.
Simon Greenhalgh,
Deputy Head of Primary,
On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team.
SAFE, HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
