Jimmy Choong
Drum Specialist
Primarily a drummer with a piano upbringing, Jimmy first cut his teeth in 2003 as the drummer of the Malaysian post-punk indie band "NAO". He was responsible for playing drums for songs which defied easy categorisation. His accomplishments in "NAO" include performing locally in Malaysia as well as in China where the band was invited to perform twice for the Midi Music Festival held in Beijing. Whilst Jimmy is no longer playing for the band, his unique drumming can still be heard on their debut album and subsequent EP.
Despite already having a Grade 8 certification in practical piano (ABRSM), Jimmy's never-ending desire to improve oneself led him to earn a music degree at International College of Music (certified by Wolverhampton University of London) where he learnt and cultivated other skills that make up a well-rounded musician such as composition, arranging and production.
In order to feed his need for adventure and challenge, Jimmy joined the renowned percussion team known as HANDS in 2007 where he learnt a great deal of Far Eastern drumming and also incorporated Western drumming techniques into HANDS' rigorous routines. His tenure with HANDS led him to perform in France, Hawaii, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and Turkmenistan. The experience he has gained from being widely traveled shows in his conversations and outlook on life.
Jimmy also engages in experimental and avant garde music. Examples of such endeavours include his collaboration with the famous local composer, Ng Chor Guan in the Polka Dot Playground where his percussive efforts accompanied Ng's Theremin as well as providing electronic percussion and sound design for Seni Tiga #01 : Body Riddle.
Jimmy is well versed in multiple music genres as well as languages and can be found cheekily infusing a jazz song with rock grooves during practice sessions when the situation calls for it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you offering this programme if you already have music in Sri KDU Subang Jaya?
In delivering music of the National Curriculum of England and Wales, students in Sri KDU Subang Jaya learn how to listen to, analyse, perform and compose music through exploration of Knowledge, Skills, and Understanding. Instruments and music technology is used in music to explore concepts within the study of music. For example, when learning about Jazz, students will explore how to play chords, typically on a guitar or keyboard. They will however not learn the guitar and keyboard explicitly, and the concept of chords will be stand alone. The purpose of the Music Coaching programme is to offer students the opportunity to have specialised instrumental training. In England and Wales it is mandatory to offer a Music Coaching programme.
When will the lessons be?
The lessons run through the school day on a rotating timetable.
What is a rotating timetable?
A timetable that moves forward by 1 slot every week. For example, a student may have their 1st lesson at 9am, 2nd lesson at 10am the following week, 3rd lesson at 11am the following week, and so on. This is to ensure that in a term a student does not miss the same lesson.
Why can’t you just put lessons on a lunch time or after school?
It is impossible to staff instrumental teachers during these times due to the high volume of students learning instruments.
Will I need to buy my own instruments?
In order to maximise progress it is a requirement that students have their own instrument, with the exception of beginner harp, drum kit and bass guitar.
Can I learn with my friend?
Key research suggests this is a very good idea, especially as a beginner. This is encouraged, but as students become more advanced they may require an individual lesson.
How does the group lesson work?
On a first come first served basis, students of similar levels will be paired for lessons.
Do I need an instrument?
It is mandatory that you have an instrument before starting lessons, with the exception of Harp, Drums kit and Bass Guitar. Music rooms can be used for practice during lunch and after school times on a booking system.
What is the expected commitment?
The expectation is to commit to lessons for the whole school year.
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
