Dear Families,
“Well-being is not a consequence of success but a cause of it.”
I came across a quote this week that was penned by Psychologists, Edward Deci & Richard
Ryan, and the words speak volumes on the necessities of looking after oneself being just as
important as academic studies. In order to be successful, the root cause of each person’s
journey that we take is very much helped determined by our own well-being. Taking time
to pause, reflect, and sometimes asking for help can result in being even more successful.
According to the company Ipsos, statistically Malaysia is one of the happiest countries in
South East Asia, with 77% of Malaysians saying that they feel happy. Good news for
Malaysia! However, as a school how can we continue to strengthen the well-being and
happiness of our students, especially during challenging times such as studies and
assessments?
Well-being has been a particular focus within secondary as the Term 2 assessments
approach. School Counsellors, Ms Shahiraa and Ms Pui Yee, organised Mental Well-being
activities this week that students completed during lessons. Activities focused on an array
of approaches and methods to help promote positive well-being to themselves and others.
This included identifying stress triggers and how students can cope with certain stresses,
writing kindness postcards to spread positivity amongst their peers, using music as a tool
for self-regulation, and listing problems and creating kindness based solutions. Staff were
also provided with opportunities Tuesday afternoon to take part in a well-being activity run
by members of the team; this included activities such as colouring in, cup cake decorating,
chatting over coffee and cake, reading, and playing board games.
Student Voice offers an opportunity for students to share their thoughts and feelings for us
as a school to review and reflect on. One of the key questions asked in the Student Voice
was ‘How do you feel about the upcoming Term 2 assessments?’ Some students expressed
how nervous they were and wished to do as best as they could, but many others also
commented on how much teachers and their friends helped them with their studies. Well-
being can very much be enhanced through the power of listening and knowing when to
help someone; we are delighted that our community continues to do so and this reflects in
our Student Voice.
It is inevitable that students will feel nervous or unprepared for exams and assessments.
We always emphasize to our students that they can only try their best, and if they ever need
help they can always reach out to their teachers, friends, peers, and family. Being part of a
supportive and understanding community is also a necessity in promoting positive well-
being.
The power of listening to others and helping also resonated in our secondary assembly
today when we invited the police to facilitate an assembly on bullying. It was an insightful
and informative presentation that helped students understand the impact of bullying, but
more importantly what role they can play in supporting their friends and peers, in person
and online. They also explained the Malaysian law in regard to bullying so that secondary
had a better understanding of how they are protected. This was followed by the first of our
Relationship and Sex Education Workshops, with the main priority in educating and
equipping our students to be confident in knowing how they can look after themselves,
emotionally, physically, and holistically.
Promoting well-being is not limited to the classroom. Offering students opportunities
outside of the classroom can enrich and excite a student’s experience of education. This
week Year 3 visited Petrosains, The Discover Centre, the perfect place for students to
interactively explore and engage in a variety of exciting STEM projects. Team spirit will
definitely take place next week with the Primary Sports Day taking place at the Panasonic
Stadium next Thursday. I’m sure that there will be lots of cheering and celebrations coming
from Primary!
We wish everyone a lovely and restful long weekend coming up, and a Happy Thaipusam
for those celebrating. Please note that on Monday the school will be closed as this is a
public holiday.
Warm regards,
Ms Clare Lama,
Deputy Head of Secondary,
On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team.
SAFE, HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
