Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope everyone has managed to stay cool this week.
This week we have been monitoring the API (Air Pollution Index) closely due the burning in Sumatra, Indonesia and we will continue to do so. If the level indicates that no outside activity can take place, then we will move all outside learning indoors. This will be the same for CCA and ECA, where if we cannot relocate indoor due to an existing activity then we will inform parents for them to decide whether to come and collect their child at the end of school or pick up at the usual time. In this case, students will be supervised indoors. Due to the cafeteria being open in design, if the API is too high, then students who buy lunch at school will collect their meals and then return to their form rooms to eat. At these times, there will be no 'playtime' in open air spaces.
Next week, as a school we will be celebrating Mental Health Week 2023. This is an opportunity for our community to unite behind the theme "Mental health is a universal human right" to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right. During the week, we will look at simple ways in and out of lessons to maintain positive mental health and start a circle time initiative in form groups aimed at talking issues through and giving students the confidence to speak out about their thoughts and feeling.
2023 Mental Health Day is on Tuesday 10th October, so we urge EVERYONE in school - and at home to wear GREEN on that day, as this is the Mental Health signature colour.
As I write this the final touches are taking place in the MPH ready for the Academic Awards 2022-2023 event this afternoon. Well done to all nominees and the winners. For each award, we have nominees and from these nominees, the winner is selected. The winner - Top Performer is selected based on academic data from last year and is scaled to the following criteria:
• 50% on End of Year Examination.
• 50% on End of Year Examination.
• 15% on Behaviour for Learning grades.
The Principal’s Award was nominated by staff but verified with data school and the awards committee.
The CEO’s Award, meanwhile, was by student application and was scored for participation, level of representation – school /state etc., outcomes in competitions, levels of leadership alongside good academic grades. If there was a tie in points, last year’s attendance was also considered.
As a school we would like to celebrate every child that has made either academic or personal growth last year and we hope that all students, not just the nominees or winners, continue to work to their potential and to be their best selves both in and outside the classroom.
Mental health…
For next week, I urge all to take ONLY 2 minutes (set a timer) to sit comfortably and center oneself - Close your eyes, ‘feel’ your breathing and think about a positive aspect of your life. On opening your eyes, think about the ONE thing you wish to complete or accomplish that day. Or alternatively, use a mindfulness app… Enjoy!
Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend
Regards,
April Peters
