Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term 3!
I trust you are all well and for those who managed to travel during the holiday, I hope you
had a lovely time. To our Muslim families, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!
This week, I had the great pleasure to launch the Duke of Edinburgh International Award for
the school and parents, alongside the exciting opportunity for students on the award or
those seeking a challenge. We also launched an expedition to climb Mount Kinabalu in
Sabah guided and mentored by Datuk Magendran M. Munisamy, the first Malaysian to
climb Mount Everest, so what a great start to the term and to this endeavour!
The rest of this week was Cambridge IGCSE Speaking and Year 6 and Year 9 Cambridge
Checkpoint examinations taking place. I always expect the proper behaviour from our
students at all but this week the behaviour in the examination has been outstanding and I
was very proud of everyone.
Today, we have a group of students taking part in our first athletics external competition, so
fingers crossed they come back proud of their individual achievements and as a team.
For this term, the school is implementing a tracking of learning system to academic
progress tracking and support teacher development. This tracking for learning involves
lesson observations by middle leaders and SLT followed by a reflective conversation. The
focus of the tracking is concentrated upon the learning taking place in terms of brain
activity changes (learning) during a lesson. This can be defined simply in terms of:
GOOD struggle when the brain is engaged in learning new knowledge and skills, when the
brain is working hard!
Are the children Acquiring new knowledge or skills?
Are the children Reinforcing their knowledge and skills through appropriate practise?
Or
BAD struggle when there is little brain activity which could mean the tasks are too easy or
they are too difficult and the brain isn’t working, therefore little learning or progress is
being made.
Are the children Coasting, as they already have the knowledge and skills?
Are the children Overwhelmed by the knowledge and skills, as it's simply too hard?
Please do understand that in any one lesson the learning can flow through different stages.
However, the majority of the lesson should demonstrate a GOOD struggle.
Looking forward to next week, we have a packed agenda in the Book Week - character
dress-ups on Monday (please read the Book Week section), Earth Day and Eco Week and
the Hari Raya Open House. This year, many international dates have converged! On
Wednesday, I remind everyone to come to school in traditional Malay or a cultural dress or
in their PE Kit. I am looking forward to the whole school coming together.
At the end of the week, we have the first Primary Year 5 and Year 6 residential. I'm a little
jealous of those going after seeing the itinerary, so I hope all those going have a great time
and develop their leadership skills further.
On Friday 26th April, the Cambridge IGCSE Summer examinations start. I again wish the
Year 11s the very best of luck.
As announced in the last newsletter, I would like to call a meeting of all interested Parents/
Guardians who want to support the further development of the school. A formal invite,
hard copy, will be sent home with your child on Monday. Please register your interest and
put a preferred meeting time for the inaugural meeting. I am looking forward to a
productive relationship.
I wish everyone a pleasant weekend.
Regards,
April Peters
