Dear Students, Parents and Friends of SIKG,
Selamat Hari Merdeka!
We have had a great week at Sri KDU International School Klang and after bedding-in
last week, the term is now gathering momentum. We have had ‘Meet the Principal’
meetings for the parents of Year 11, 7 and this afternoon, a ‘Meet and Greet’ for the
entire Primary school with the Secondary school meeting next week.
This week, we have also held Head Prefect interviews and School Council nominations
with all the students representing themselves with distinction. We will keep you waiting
just another couple of days until Monday’s assembly to find out who the successful
candidates are.
This week has also seen the school’s Tracking the Learning mechanism fully
implemented - more on how this is done below. In summary, we have seen some
wonderful learning and of course, some areas for further development but above all, we
have benefited from the way the teachers have reflected upon the learning in their
lessons and planned for even better learning experiences in the future.
Good Learning and Tracking the Learning
Good Learning
This happens when the brain goes through a transformational process. Either
strengthening connections or making new ones. A good teacher can use ongoing
assessment for learning – the things we do every minute of every lesson to measure
whether these transformational processes are taking place – and adjust the lesson to
suit the needs of the learners.
Tracking the Learning
This is the XCL methodology for monitoring and developing learning in classrooms. The
system works by school leaders visiting classrooms for 20-30 minutes and discussing
with students the levels of ‘good struggle’ or ‘bad struggle’ they are experiencing. We
believe that learning is at its best when we are pushed beyond our comfort zone.
Leaders will be looking to see if students are learning new knowledge or skills through
making new connections (Acquiring), strengthening existing connections in their brains
through deliberate practice (Reinforcing), finding work too easy and therefore no
change happening in the brain (Coasting) or in an overload scenario where the work is
entirely inaccessible (Overwhelming).
Classroom visits are followed up with learning conversations where the teacher reflects
on the students' learning and identifies ways to adjust their teaching to increase the
proportion of time spent where learners experience ‘good struggle’ and therefore
effective learning.
Over time the school will track improvements in the learning rates in classes and
provide targeted support for teachers to reach the next level of their development.
Reporting academic progress - early grade report to be issued on the 21st of
October
Following feedback from students and parents about the timing of the sharing of
academic progress data, we are introducing a new Progress Report ahead of the
Deepavali holiday. This will allow for earlier intervention and for issues to be discussed
quickly with parents.
Calendar Change – Parents and Guardians Association (PGA) Coffee Morning
The PGA Coffee Morning originally scheduled for Wednesday the 4th of September was
moved to earlier in the term (August 23rd). Please note that there is no longer a PGA
Coffee Morning scheduled for Wednesday the 4th of September.
Sri KDU Uniform Store
Please see the Parent Guide to buying school uniform here.
Varsity jackets are now in stock and available to purchase.
“Can children leave the school premises without being collected by an adult?”
I was asked this question at a recent parent meeting and wanted to take the
opportunity to clarify it for all. No, due to the dangers of a busy road nearby, no child is
permitted to leave without collection from a responsible approved adult. This message
will be reinforced to the students.
With the new apartment complex opening opposite the school, we appreciate some
Secondary parents may wish to request the release of their child independently. If so,
please write to me and exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
Staff contact list
The best person to contact for information about your child's education is usually your
child’s class teacher or subject teacher. Emails will have gone home over the last
fortnight with teachers introducing themselves to parents. If you have a concern that
you feel needs to be escalated beyond the teacher, please do get in touch with one of
the Senior Leadership Team.
Regards,
Rhys Thomas
Campus Principal
