Dear Students, Parents and Friends of SIKG,
It has been a joy to see our enthusiastic students back this week. We started the week
with an assembly to reflect upon and celebrate the successes of the first term and to
preview what we have to look forward to in Term 2.
Here are the Term 1 highlights:
- Our Tracking Learning visits are showing continuous improvements in the standard of
lessons, our Early years curriculum has been enhanced to include swimming,
Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia, we have added new teachers including an additional
experienced Design Technology teacher & EYFS Teacher.
- New Co-Curricular Activities have been added, giving more choice than ever before,
and now include before-school activities.
- A range of events have included debating and public speaking competitions, odd
socks day and a Science showcase in Primary.
- We have introduced new academic support programmes with the creation of our
English Language Learning Academy (ELLA) and Chinese Studies Programme.
- We took learning out of the campus with year group trips for all, our Secondary
Leadership Camp and our Mount Kinabalu Expedition.
- We have enhanced campus safety with the installation of lock lines and improved
pool security to keep our younger children safe, while we trained 25 of our staff as
first aiders.
- The revitalisation of the mini-stage with a colourful new mural and a ‘play-me’ piano
has brought vibrancy to Academic Street.
- Wonderful musical performances have enlivened our weekly assemblies along with
the introduction of National and State anthems, and we also revamped our major
cultural celebrations with phenomenal community support shown at or Deepavali and
Christmas events.
- Our students’ sporting prowess has been on show through success in badminton and
swimming competitions against other schools and of course we came together for
the excellent SIKG sports day.
Term 2 - To look forward to:
- Even more CCAs have been added giving our students more choice than ever before.
We have introduced additional trips for Term 2.
- We embark on an extensive teacher training programme called Learning Loop, to
further raise the standards of support and guidance for students.
- We are adding a table tennis table for student recreational use at Academic Street.
We are holding our third annual SIKG Swimming Gala.
- The Association of International Schools in Aisia (AIMS) will be visiting and hopefully
ratifying our membership.
- New opportunities will be offered to compete in sports including athletics and
basketball fixtures, and we have just launched our partnership with Destiny Football
Academy.
- We will again host a STEAM week culminating in our Technovation Challenge.
- We will celebrate World Book Day and Pi Day.
- We will host the XCL Malaysia Chinese speaking competition.
Thank you for continuing to be part of the success of the school!
Destiny Football Academy
SIKG is partnering with Destiny Football Academy to provide professional football
training for our students. Destiny presented at Monday’s assembly and works
holistically to develop young players through sports and an emphasis on academic
achievement and well-being. Destiny has close ties with the German Bundesliga as
well as national-level football here in Malaysia. Please see Destiny’s graphic below in the Advertorials section for more information.
Stray Dogs
There is a new pack of stray dogs in the neighbourhood, and they seem to be more
aggressive than the last pack. Our guards have been proactive in moving them on and
we have reported their presence to the local authorities. However, we recommend that
you drop your children off and collect them within the school compound to avoid any
risk posed.
Parents Parking - now safe from birds
Parents who display the Sri KDU parent car sticker are very welcome to park in the
parking bays at the front of the school and in the covered area near the drop-off point.
We have installed netting over the holiday so bird droppings on your paintwork should no longer be an issue!
Curriculum Survey
The Curriculum Survey will provide us with vital information to make decisions for the
future of the school. Thank you to the fifteen parents who already completed the
survey, but we really need more responses to help inform the decision making process.
If you did not yet get a chance to respond to the survey, you may find the link here:
https://forms.office.com/r/FeQDihU4Xt
The survey will remain open until Friday, January 17th and please note that this is
different to the XCL Malaysia general parent satisfaction survey that ran in early
December.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey.
Lock lines – Phase 1 Active from Monday, January 13th
The school’s new lock lines (phase 1) will be locked from Monday January 13th. If you
are visiting the school by appointment, please meet the relevant staff member at the
reception. If making an unscheduled visit, please also head to reception and speak to
Loges, our receptionist who will be happy to assist you.
A school lock line aims to provide an additional barrier to unauthorised adults from
accessing the children at school. This is a requirement of accreditation with
international organisations such as COBIS, which we will be working towards over the
next 12-18 months. Work on Phase 2 of the lock line at the cafeteria area will begin
soon.
Regards,
Rhys Thomas
