Sri KDU Schools proudly celebrate the remarkable achievement of Teng Yu Xuan, who has secured the prestigious Singapore ASEAN Scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Singapore. Driven by his passion for learning and excellence in both academics and sports, Yu Xuan’s success is a testament to his hard work and the strong partnership between his family and the school, showcasing how collaboration can unlock a student's full potential.
For Yu Xuan, the decision to apply for the Singapore ASEAN Scholarship was motivated by his deep love for learning, particularly in Math and Science. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I was inspired to apply for this scholarship because of my passion for subjects like Math and Science. Over the past few years, I’ve participated in competitions such as the Singapore Math Olympiad. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to attend the Young Achievers Leadership Academy camp in Singapore, where I visited the National University of Singapore (NUS). I was deeply impressed by the high standards of education in Singapore and how they encourage students to explore their passions and interests.”
He further expressed his aspiration to pursue excellence in both academics and sports, particularly swimming. “Watching athletes like Pan Zhanle achieve their dreams during the recent Olympics has motivated me to work hard toward my own goals. This scholarship is a stepping stone for me to pursue excellence in both academics and sports,” he added.
Yu Xuan’s father, Mr. Teng Teck Yee, highlighted the role of Sri KDU in supporting his son’s growth. “Throughout the application process, the school provided immense support. They worked closely with us, preparing all the necessary academic records and supporting documents in a timely manner. Their cooperation ensured that Yu Xuan’s application to the Singapore Ministry of Education went smoothly.”
This achievement, according to Mr. Teng, is the culmination of years of effort and a reflection of Yu Xuan’s strong work ethic and resilience. “Yu Xuan’s success is largely due to his passion for learning and his determination to excel, not just in academics but in all aspects of his life, including sports. His time management and humility in seeking advice have also been key factors in his development,” Mr. Teng remarked.
When asked about his reaction to receiving the scholarship, Yu Xuan shared his excitement, saying, “When I received the news, I felt a mixture of excitement and pride. It represents the beginning of a new chapter in my life, filled with opportunities for growth and development. At the same time, I am aware of the challenges ahead, but I believe these experiences will help me grow.”
Yu Xuan’s journey at Sri KDU has been transformative. From his early days as a quiet and reserved student, he has blossomed into a confident and driven individual. He credits the support of his teachers, particularly those who recognized his potential early on. “My homeroom teacher in Primary 2, Mr. Tee, noticed that I was hesitant to participate in class. He assigned me the role of class monitor, which helped me build confidence and develop a sense of responsibility. That experience made a big difference in how I approached my studies and interactions with others.”
The environment at Sri KDU, with its emphasis on holistic education, provided Yu Xuan with opportunities to excel both academically and personally. “Sri KDU offers consistent support by having subject teachers provide topical assessments regularly, ensuring that I fully understand each subject area. The school also promotes participation in international exams such as the ICAS, which helped me assess my skills against international standards. These experiences have been instrumental in preparing me for the challenges I will face in Singapore,” Yu Xuan explained.
As Yu Xuan prepares for his new journey in Singapore, he reflects on the things he will miss most about his time at Sri KDU. “I will miss many aspects of Sri KDU, especially the campus, my teachers, and my classmates. Over the past six years, I’ve created countless wonderful memories here. The guidance from my teachers, the care from the principal, and the laughter shared with friends are moments I will always cherish.”
For Mr. Teng, the transformation in his son over the years has been profound. “Yu Xuan started as a quiet boy, but over time, he has grown into a confident and determined young man. The nurturing environment at Sri KDU allowed him to express his talents and develop a sense of self-assurance. His journey at Sri KDU has truly prepared him for this next chapter in Singapore.”
This achievement underscores the importance of the partnership between schools and families in shaping a child’s success. As Mr. Teng observed, “The collaboration between Sri KDU and us as parents has been instrumental in ensuring Yu Xuan’s success. The school provided the academic guidance, while we focused on fostering discipline and resilience at home.”
“We are incredibly proud of Yu Xuan’s achievement,” said Puan Shamsiah, Principal of Sri KDU National Primary, Kota Damansara. “His success is a reflection of his hard work, the support of his family, and the commitment of our educators. We look forward to seeing him continue to shine as he embarks on this exciting new journey.”
Sri KDU Schools take pride in providing a well-rounded education that not only builds academic foundations but also fosters leadership, teamwork, and character development. As Yu Xuan embarks on his next chapter in Singapore, the school community is confident that he is well-prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Growing up in Sri KDU Secondary School has given me a multitude of skills and plenty of opportunities. Having spent years in an institution that has always pushed for holistic education, focusing on supplementing academics with co-curricular activities has pushed students like me to step out of their comfort zone to really deep dive into our own individual strengths and weaknesses. The many activities and events held in school like Paramount Championships or Performance & Awards Nights have truly supported me to build confidence and step outside of my comfort zone. I am also grateful that beyond the SPM syllabus I had in 2009, I also get to widen my horizons with compulsory classes for Mandarin and ICT which have proven useful today in my career. I believe this has greatly impacted my way of working now, especially in my industry and line of work.
