Dear Families,
As we end week 3 of term 1, our first full week of school since return, I'd like to start by introducing myself in my new role as Head of Enrichment and Wider Learning here at SISJ. In my role, I oversee various aspects of learning that extend beyond the classroom, enriching our students’ educational experience.
I'm going to structure this week’s newsletter introduction around our Sri KDU Promises that Mrs. Fleming outlined in her message last week.
Holistic Character Development
This week marked the start of our CCA programme, a crucial element in our students' holistic development. CCAs offer a wide range of opportunities for students to explore their passions, acquire new skills, and build friendships with their peers. Whether it's through
sports, the arts, or academic pursuits, our CCA programme has grown further this year to provide our students with even more opportunities.
It was fantastic to see the first sessions this week and the excitement on the faces of students as they mixed with new groups of students and teachers to begin their programme of new skills and experiences. I attempted to see as many sessions as possible in my walks around the school, with some highlights including seeing our new Brazilian Jujitsu coach in action. Fresh from a local competition, he was teaching a group of students in our new Martial Arts room. Another highlight was the inaugural session of the Junior Duke of Edinburgh programme. This is a wonderful addition to our offerings, and it's led by Nicola Gray, Head of Year 1. It's wonderful to see our students embark on this new adventure.
Continuous Improvement
Our XCL Academies also began this week, giving further opportunities for students to extend their skills and delve deeply into specific areas of interest, honing their skills and expertise with supprort from the expert coaches. These academies saw a host of new
activities, including Parkour, Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball and the popular addition of the ‘Parent Community Classes’ in Swimming and Yoga. Sign-up to these sessions remains open via the XCL Academies Website.
Future Proof Preparation
In alignment with our commitment to building future leaders, we recently initiated the
selection process for leadership positions within the school. Last week, we extended the
opportunity to the entire student body, encompassing both primary and secondary levels,
to express their interest in these roles. For the position of Student Council members,
candidates prepared speeches outlining their vision and plans for their respective roles,
which they then presented to their peers. We are pleased to announce that successful
candidates from both primary and secondary levels have been officially revealed to the
student body, and their profiles can be found in the subsequent sections of our newsletter.
Welfare and Safeguarding
We are also mindful of the environmental conditions around us, particularly the ongoing
haze situation. The health and safety of our school community remains paramount, and we
have been closely monitoring the haze levels following the guidance from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and our Haze
Management Policy. We stand ready to adjust our outdoor activities and protocols as
necessary to ensure the well-being of our school community. Please note that these
adjustments may be made without notifying parents, so as to avoid confusion with pick-up
or drop-off for CCAs.
Top Academic Outcomes
This week an important part of our assessment process was conducted with the CAT4
baseline assessments taking place. These assessments provide valuable insights into our
students' progress and potential, helping us tailor their learning.
Finally, as we build and improve our swimming programme, we invited parents with
children in our ‘Swim Squads’ to a meeting with Coach Adrian, our Director of Swimming
and had an exceptional turnout, with approximately 45 enthusiastic parents in attendance.
Your involvement and support are truly appreciated, and we eagerly anticipate the further
success of our students in the pool!
As always, we encourage you to stay engaged with our school and reach out with any
questions that you may have. Wishing you a delightful weekend.
On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team,
Joe Bently
Head of Enrichment and Wider Learning
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
