Dear Families,
You may have seen the phrase ‘Building Future Leaders since 2003’ on all our school boards
and website. After twenty years of leadership development we are proud to say that
student leadership remains an integral part of student life at SRI KDU. As mentioned in the
newsletter last week, SRI KDU is a nurturing ground for future leaders and this is evidenced
by the number of leadership opportunities that are offered to students in all phases of the
school.
The key reasons for providing Leadership roles at SRI KDU Subang Jaya are numerous. The
development of essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving,
decision-making, and time management, are skills are not only valuable in school but also
in the future careers and personal lives of students. Taking on leadership roles also boosts a
child's self-confidence and self-esteem as they get to make active changes for our school
improvement and subsequently see the impact of their initiatives. As they take on these
initiatives and improvements, they also learn about accountability as they are held
responsible for their actions and decisions. Fundamentally, students learn that their voice
and actions can make a difference, fostering a sense of agency and social responsibility.
Our leadership programmes are aimed at building great leaders and are structured to align
with both our school mission and our 5 promises.
As a school we have active Student Councils in both Primary and Secondary who meet
weekly with an emphasis on what they can do to improve all facets of school life. The
Primary Student Council are currently relaunching a new and improved ‘Robins’ leadership
programme for Years 1 to 6. The goal of the Robins programme for Years 1 to 6 students is
‘taking ownership of actions and caring by helping others and the environment around them’
and this goal is divided into three foci - ‘Senses’, ‘Ownership’ and ‘Nature’. Each year group
has their own ‘I Can’ statements to achieve and this helps them get a Bronze Award (Years 1
and 2), a Silver Award (Years 3 and 4) or a Gold Award (Years 5 and 6). Our Primary Student
Council have decided there is a need to create a new booklet for students to help them
achieve an award; a need to organise assemblies that celebrate the Robins concept; and a
need to create a support system for students with a list of ideas on how they can achieve
the ‘I Can’ statements. For example, the Primary student council are now working alongside
the Secondary student council to design road safety signs that they would like to use to
support the safety of our community around the outside of the school. This is the first
project in a year when a ‘Legacy Project’ and ‘Picnic Area Project’ have already been ideas
proposed by our Primary students enjoying the opportunity to lead school improvement.
Furthermore, the Year 6 students are now electing House Captains for the year. The chosen
House Captains will run assemblies, events and communications, as well as supporting their
houses in the quest for the House Cup this year.
In the Secondary School, as well as weekly leadership workshops each Friday, we have the
privilege of hosting engaging leadership lectures that are enriched by the insights of
leading industrial experts. The presence of these distinguished experts not only brings real-
world relevance to our academic pursuits but also fosters a profound connection between
theory and practice. Each session serves as a unique opportunity for students to interact
directly with individuals who have achieved remarkable success in their respective fields,
allowing them to gather valuable life lessons and inspiration that will undoubtedly shape
their futures.
Our first leadership lecture of the term was delivered by Former Member of Parliament,
Tony Pua, an Oxford University graduate who has developed a successful leadership career
in finance, technology, and business. The esteemed Mr. Pua generously shared his extensive
career wisdom, imparting valuable lessons on leadership and ethical work principles. A
friendly Q&A session followed, during which Mr. Pua provided advice on maintaining
motivation and navigating future challenges. This week, we have Captain Eugene as a guest
speaker. As a leading expert in the aviation and leadership industry, he will share key
information on how to develop a successful career pathway in aerospace engineering and
aviation.
The prestigious positions of Head Girl and Head Boy have been allocated to Julia Lim and
Mika Azman in Year 13 after a rigorous process of selection. Julia and Mika have taken time
this week to give you an insight into their leadership initiatives within this newsletter. It is
wonderful to see that they too want to develop leadership capacity across the school with a
‘Leaders in Action’ initiative. This aligns again with our SRI KDU statement of intent that
‘Leaders are not born, they are built, and we aim to build great leaders!’
On Behalf of the Senior Leadership Team,

We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
