Dear Families,
Our mission of ‘Safe, Happy and Successful’ is carefully ordered in terms of priority, with
Safety being the prime concern of all staff and their community of students and parents.
The rationale is that when children and adults feel safe, happiness and success are more
likely to ensue. Those who are familiar with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, will recall that
physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest) and safety needs (security, safety) are
considered the ‘basic’ human needs. Psychological needs and self-fulfilment that occur
next in Maslow’s hierarchy are therefore considered largely dependent on the achievement
of the basic need foundations. Schools can play an important part in ensuring these basic
needs are met. This part begins with creating both a safe environment and strong
safeguarding practices. As educators, we have a legal and ethical duty to safeguard the
welfare of all students under our care. Our adherence to safeguarding procedures ensures
compliance with relevant laws and regulations, demonstrating our commitment to
upholding the highest standards of care and protection.
Therefore, our Promise of Welfare and Safeguarding, references that we will adopt
evidence-based safeguarding practices in line with international safety standards. To fulfil
this promise, we need trained staff throughout the school. Every staff member at Sri KDU is
trained in international safeguarding practices. As I write this newsletter, Mrs Fleming and
Miss Jazayeri are undertaking their Level 3 Safeguarding Course to renew their
Safeguarding Certificates. All the Senior Leadership team and the school safeguarding
team are required to have this certification to ensure they are up to date with current
practice in keeping our students safe.
We strive always to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable
disclosing any concerns they may have. Our staff are trained to listen, respond sensitively,
and take appropriate action to address student needs and ensure their safety. Collaboration
with parents and the wider community is also key in promoting a culture of vigilance and
accountability. It is perhaps important here to share how our safeguarding processes work.
Early identification of potential risks and vulnerabilities allows us to intervene promptly and
provide necessary support to students and families. Our safeguarding measures help detect
issues at an early stage, preventing them from escalating into more significant problems.
Whenever we have a concern, the member of staff who has identified the issue records
detailed information on to our ‘MyConcern’ online safeguarding platform. This
immediately alerts the safeguarding team who prioritise this concern over all other school
matters. This point is where the safeguarding team’s training enables them to review the
issue and take immediate action. As mentioned, these early interventions allow for a quick
resolution in most cases or, alternatively, enables a thorough support plan to be
implemented immediately.
Beyond addressing risks and vulnerabilities, safeguarding procedures also promote the
overall well-being of students. By fostering a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity, we
empower students to develop healthy relationships, build resilience, and achieve their full
potential. This culture is developed through our PSHE programmes, strong interpersonal
relationship between all our school community and student voice. The student surveys that
we conduct including PASS (Pupils attitude to school and self), subject surveys and daily
conversations, allow students to express their thoughts and feelings on many platforms.
We encourage parents to actively engage in safeguarding efforts by:
- Familiarising themselves with our school's safeguarding policies and procedures. School
Policies
- Maintaining open communication with their child and school staff regarding any
concerns or issues.
- Reporting any safeguarding concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead or a
member of the safeguarding team.
Together, we can create a safe and nurturing environment where every child feels valued,
respected, and protected.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in safeguarding our students'
welfare.
Have a lovely weekend,
David Wilcock,
Head of Primary
On behalf of the School Leadership Team
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
