Dear Families
Last week’s wonderful Malaysia Day assembly and celebrations, followed by the public
holiday on Monday and our pending accreditation visit from the Council of British
International Schools (COBIS) made me take time to consider the complexities of the
relationship between international education and the idea of the nation state.
As a former British colony, Malaysians are rightly proud of their independence and cultural
heritage. I hope that by choosing to join the Sri KDU Subang Jaya community, our families
also recognise that there is value in some of the ideas that we take from the British
education system and transfer into our learning environment.
Although I hold a U.K. passport, I have spent more of my life living outside of the U.K. than
within it. Many of our students will hold passports from countries which they haven’t
resided in for a long time and some will have lived in many different countries by the time
they reach the end of their schooling. An international school is a place where we can
recognise that all people, regardless of nationality, should be celebrated and treated with
respect. Our diverse community comes from a wide range of linguistic and cultural
backgrounds, but we gather each day, united, beneath the warm umbrella of Sri KDU
Subang Jaya to help one another to grow and develop in our appreciation and
understanding. I hope that for our community and visitors, our school feels like a place
where they don’t need to worry about which country they are from, what they look like or
their background. Rather, we are a place where all are treated fairly and equally with both
dignity and understanding.
I was delighted to see some wonderful Bahasa Melayu learning taking place across our
primary school this week and would like to extend my gratitude to our team who bring to
life this rich and colourful language to those from both Malaysia and other countries.
Furthermore, I know that in our primary school, we have placed importance on including
Malaysian context to some of our units over the coming year and remember fondly my Year
6 class from last year where we looked at the urban development taking place near to the
amazing natural resources we have here in Malaysia. If an issue is on our own doorstep,
then our learning becomes immediately relevant and visible as we go about our daily lives.
Having lived in many places during my life I have learnt that, regardless of where we are,
there are many similarities in our day-to-day lives, but it is the tremendous beauty in the
unfamiliar and the nuanced differences where we are able to experience wonder and learn
something that would have remained hidden to us had we not had the fortune to exist in
the blurred lines between cultural, political, religious or historical boundaries.
On behalf of the entire community here at Sri KDU Subang Jaya, I take huge pride in
wishing you an exciting and diverse week ahead and would like to challenge you to learn at
least one new thing about Malaysia or a new Malaysian word before you eat your supper
this evening. Please feel free to email me with your chosen word or topic; I am sure you can
teach me something new and exciting.
Have a lovely weekend,
Simon Greenhalgh,
Deputy Head of Primary
On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
