"Our approach begins with understanding the different experiences and needs within our school community. We want students, families and staff to feel that they belong, that their perspectives are valued and that they have opportunities to participate fully in school life. This recognition celebrates the collective effort behind that work, while encouraging us to keep listening, learning and improving," said Sheena.
Making Inclusion Part of Everyday Learning
At Sri KDU Subang Jaya, inclusion is not treated as a separate programme. It is part of how students learn, interact and make sense of the world around them.
All Primary classrooms are engaging in work to broaden curriculum representation, helping students encounter a wider range of experiences and perspectives through their learning. Teachers are encouraged to connect lessons to students' lives and the world they know. For example, mathematics lessons exploring financial concepts may use Malaysian Ringgit, while lessons about rivers can draw on examples from Malaysia and other countries represented within the classroom.
The school also recognises that children learn in different ways. Flexible teaching approaches and support for different learning needs help students access learning, demonstrate their understanding and develop confidence in their abilities.
Beyond the classroom, students have opportunities to engage with wider communities, including Orang Asli communities, participate in initiatives such as the Walk-a-thon and experience other cultures through educational trips to China and Japan. These experiences encourage students to look beyond their immediate surroundings, appreciate different perspectives and consider how they can contribute to the communities around them.
Together, these experiences help students develop qualities that matter well beyond their school years: empathy, adaptability, respect for others and the confidence to work with people from different backgrounds.
Supporting the People Who Make Up the School Community
Creating an inclusive environment also means paying attention to the people who make up the school community. Sri KDU Subang Jaya has introduced initiatives to support staff wellbeing, encourage connection and strengthen staff voice. These include Wellbeing Days, monthly birthday celebrations and opportunities for colleagues to connect informally, with flexibility for staff to participate in ways that suit their needs.
Last year, the school recorded its lowest staff turnover to date. While staff retention is influenced by many factors, this is an encouraging development in the school's continuing efforts to foster a supportive workplace.
For Cassie Fleming, Campus Principal of Sri KDU International School, Subang Jaya, the award reflects the importance of making students and families feel that they are valued members of the community.
"We are incredibly proud of this recognition, but what matters most is what it represents for our students and families. We want every child to feel known, supported and able to succeed, and every family to feel welcomed, heard and connected to our community. We believe that when young people feel secure in who they are and learn to appreciate the people around them, they are better prepared to navigate the world with confidence. This achievement belongs to our students, staff and parents, whose contributions make our community what it is," said Cassie.
A Commitment That Continues Beyond Recognition
The BMCC Business Excellence Awards recognition marks an important milestone for Sri KDU International School Subang Jaya, but the school sees inclusion as an ongoing responsibility rather than a finished achievement. Its next steps include strengthening how it measures participation, belonging and engagement, allowing the school to better understand the experiences of its community and identify where further support is needed.
My son loves Sri KDU International School Subang Jaya. He enjoys good quality teachers who build his self-confidence and motivation. He is immersed in daily exchange of best practices with his fellow classmates. His learning is not confined to the classroom as lessons include physical education where various types of sports are available. Above all, his friends and classmates here are able to collaborate positively to bring out the best in one another.
We cannot possibly itemise every single reason he loves it here but this school is now his second home – and that is saying a lot!
