House System
Primary School
In the spirit of building character, the Houses in Sri KDU International School (SIKD) are named after great world leaders; Coubertin, Mandela, Curie and Shackleton.
Each year, there are four House events which children compete in. The House events are often linked with other events in school such as the Eco Day or Sports Day.
On entering Sri KDU International Primary School, students are assigned a House. They remain in this House for the remainder of their time in SIKD. To create a feeling of belonging and tradition, siblings will be placed in the same House.
Each House has a Leader (a member of staff), a Captain and a Vice Captain (Y6 children). The House Leaders are decided each year in September. The Captain and Vice Captains are voted for by the children in the first House gathering of the year.
In the first House Challenge event of the year, the students learn about the qualities of the leader their House is named after. They compete against each other to design flags which are symbolic of their House and demonstrate their knowledge creatively. In other subsequent events, students are encouraged to be creative and work cooperatively too.
For all events, the age groups are mixed which brings great benefits to our students. The older children can practise and demonstrate their skills as leaders and the younger children get a chance to follow by example and find a ‘buddy’ in an older class.
For each House Challenge Event, the students wear their House t-shirts. They wear these t-shirts on Mondays as this is when they take part in options; this creates a sense of pride and promotes a sense of belonging.
Secondary School
The school runs a traditional House System to support the ethos of positive discipline, promotion of leadership skills, participation, collegiality and self-improvement. The House Coordinator oversees the House System.
House Captains and House Key Stage Leaders are instrumental in organising and recruiting students to take part in the events. Each House is supported by two Heads of House, one from the PE department and one from another area of the school.
All students belong to one of four Houses:
House Activities
- House Camp
- House Leadership Training
- House-based Competitions
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
