BASS, GUITAR, DRUMS
Zaim Zaidee
I am a musician, songwriter, and a producer with experience in the music industry for almost 20 years. I am also a founding partner of Nadir Studios, a music label, production house and events company that deals with all kinds of music related work, from advertisement jingles to film scoring, to producing local artists and independent bands.
As a musician, I have won several awards and competitions over the years as well as written songs that got on the local radio music charts. Sessioned for many artists across genres from traditional folk to jazz and blues funk; to rock and heavy metal; to commercial pop and hip hop. I have played at the biggest festivals in Malaysia from Penang Island Jazz Festival to Indie Fest, to Rock The World. I have also toured in Japan, Indonesia, China, and Cambodia playing our own original music.
My background is actually BA in Mass Communication from Curtin University. I have never had a formal musical education and are mostly self taught. But that greatly contributed to my unique style of playing, understanding, as well as approach to music that made me the artist I am today.
I have only started teaching music for about 5 years and fell in love with it ever since. Seeing how music could change a timid and shy student into a confident performer on stage made me realise how powerful music can be. It is a magical tool of self expression with the ability to unleash what’s hidden within. And as a music producer, this is what I always sought out for in artists. To help them find the potential of their voice and mould it to its best possible form of expression. My focus to teaching music have always been more on the pure joy and love of it rather than the rules and theories. To appreciate the freedom of self awareness. To find oneself and share it with the world. These are the things I hope to impart to my students. As the great Ludwig van Beethoven once said, “to play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable.”
PIANIST
Tan Peik Yi
As a classical pianist who loves pop music and musical theatre, I am keen to teach students who would like to experience learning the piano not only as a classical instrument but to explore the endless possibilities of playing and creating contemporary and pop music.
I teach piano from beginner, intermediate to advanced levels and this can cover classical music, pop piano or a combination of both. A solid foundation is key and you will learn techniques and concepts on how to develop your playing skills.
I believe in tailoring my lessons and repertoire to suit the musical preference and temperament of my students. Core knowledge such as music theory, chord structures, improvisation and aural skills will be taught for both types of music. With a first class honours for my undergraduate and masters degree (music performance and teaching) from the University of Melbourne, I have continued to teach, collaborate with other musicians and perform while previously leading a performing arts department at an international school for more than 10 years. I also write music and arrangements for ensembles, choirs as well as orchestras. I love to share my music experience with you whether you are a young pianist just at the beginning of your music journey, a pianist who wants to ‘play by ear’ or an experienced musician who is looking to expand your skill.
HARP, UKELELE & PIANO
Phoenix Ong
Are you looking for a teacher that will motivate, inspire and get your child to enjoy playing on a musical instrument? Well, look no further. As a Performing Arts graduate majoring in Music with more than 10 years of experience in teaching music to young children and working adults in both international school group classes and individual private lessons.
I enjoy teaching harp, piano and ukulele from beginner to advanced level. Beside sitting for graded examinations from the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) and RockSchool (RSL), my students have also had opportunity of performing in international and local competitions, music festivals and musical productions (France, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia). Notable performances: ‘The 5th Hong Kong International Youth Performance Art Festival’ in Hong Kong (2017) ‘Pluck and Magical Banyan Tree’ Harp Musical in Singapore (2017) ‘Harpes Au Max’ Festival in France (2016) ‘Le Harpes De Poise’ Concert in Cempaka International School (2015) ‘Harp of The Orient’ in Penang (2014) ‘International de Harpe’ in France (2012)
One of my harp students is currently studying in the Royal College of Music, London. He had also received invitations and performed in the ABRSM High Scorers’ Concert Malaysia, Hallmarks of Distinction (2014). I truly believe that every child has great undiscovered potential and I enjoy guiding them and discover their talents on their musical journey. Besides building a strong musical instrument foundation, I believe tutor-student relationship is also very important. Good communication helps your child learn comfortably. When they enjoy their lessons, it leaves a more lasting impression of what they learn and in turn, the students will be more confident in their performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you offering this programme if you already have music in GEMS?
In delivering music of the National Curriculum of England and Wales, students in GEMS learn how to listen to, analyse, perform and compose music through exploration of Knowledge, Skills, and Understanding. Instruments and music technology is used in music to explore concepts within the study of music. For example, when learning about Jazz, students will explore how to play chords, typically on a guitar or keyboard. They will however not learn the guitar and keyboard explicitly, and the concept of chords will be stand alone. The purpose of the Music Coaching programme is to offer students the opportunity to have specialised instrumental training. In England and Wales it is mandatory to offer a Music Coaching programme.
When will the lessons be?
The lessons run through the school day on a rotating timetable.
What is a rotating timetable?
A timetable that moves forward by 1 slot every week. For example, a student may have their 1st lesson at 9am, 2nd lesson at 10am the following week, 3rd lesson at 11am the following week, and so on. This is to ensure that in a term a student does not miss the same lesson.
Why can’t you just put lessons on a lunch time or after school?
It is impossible to staff instrumental teachers during these times due to the high volume of students learning instruments.
Will I need to buy my own instruments?
In order to maximise progress it is a requirement that students have their own instrument, with the exception of beginner harp, drum kit and bass guitar.
Can I learn with my friend?
Key research suggests this is a very good idea, especially as a beginner. This is encouraged, but as students become more advanced they may require an individual lesson.
How does the group lesson work?
On a first come first served basis, students of similar levels will be paired for lessons.
Do I need an instrument?
It is mandatory that you have an instrument before starting lessons, with the exception of Harp, Drums kit and Bass Guitar. Music rooms can be used for practice during lunch and after school times on a booking system.
What is the expected commitment?
The expectation is to commit to lessons for the whole school year.
Can these lesson contribute to my Duke of Edinburgh award?
Yes these lessons can be used for that purpose.

We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
