Geography Department
“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”
— BARACK OBAMA
Our Aims
The Geography Department believes that all children should have a deep understanding of the complex interactions of our planetary system and people. We believe that learners should know how they can make a positive impact during their lives while learning crucial skills that will help them during further study and in the job market.
Our Curriculum
During the Key Stage 3 programme of study, learners will have an in-depth knowledge of physical, human and environmental geography. They will develop into environmentally conscious individuals who work towards a sustainable future. Their learning journey begins in Year 7 when key geographical skills are practised. Students who are new to Geography as a subject are introduced to map work, essay and report writing, graph and photograph analysis, explanation, evaluation and synthesis of geographical processes.
Through our wide ranging topics learners’ minds journey to each of the world’s seven continents and Earth’s oceans throughout Year 7, 8 & 9; their knowledge of these places, peoples and problems increasing along the way. Fieldwork at every level provides learners the opportunity to conduct research and evaluate information collected. By the end of Year 9, they can confidently take the next step in their education (hopefully progressing to IGCSE Geography!), with a solid grounding in geographical skills and knowledge.
Learners continue to gain depth of understanding in geographical topics during the Cambridge IGCSE course. It is a varied course that allows learners to develop the skills and knowledge they need for post-16 studies and future employment. Some of these skills are practised during the coursework to bridge the IB Geography course, which is taught here in SKISS.
The Geography Team has a wealth of experience and backgrounds that enable them to deliver our dynamic programmes. Building Learning Power has been fully embedded and each lesson is differentiated to take into account the wide variety of learning styles. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is widespread in order to help prepare learners for the needs of the 21st century.
We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever! It was a huge transition period for us during the first 2 weeks into school, but the school’s team (Teachers, Administrative and Parent’s Teacher Association) made us feel right at home. We were given clear guidance and was kept well informed on the happenings in the school. My daughter blended into the community quite well with the care provided by the Homeroom teacher. All the teachers here are the kindest, as she told me. She looks forward to going to school and has become more disciplined in terms on knowing what tasks she needs to complete daily. She has gained so much confidence during this short period of time and was given the encouragement to explore and develop her abilities here. She was just selected as the new Primary House Captain for Year 6 AY2022/2023.
Every parent want to find the ‘perfect’ school for their child and are afraid of making the wrong decision. For us, as long she is safe and happy, we believe, she will eventually find the way to her own success.
