Student Leadership

Primary School

Students are given a wide range of opportunities to develop and practise leadership skills in preparation for secondary education, higher studies and life beyond school.

The Student Leadership opportunities we offer include Student Council, House Captains and School Prefects and Vice Captains, and Eco Council.

Our Student Leadership activities focus on improving the quality of learning and teaching in the classroom, supporting the school’s aim to be a place where everyone enjoys learning and is creative – trying new things, finding solutions and embracing their responsibilities.

The students learn to become a leader in lessons too. We have class monitors and, throughout the school during lessons, group work is used to encourage all students to take turns as leaders.

Secondary School

"Building Future Leaders since 2003"

At Sri KDU International School, our motto is “Building Future Leaders since 2003”; this is because we know what we want our students to be in the future. SKID students are nurtured and developed to become leaders in both the public and private sectors, in Malaysia and around the world.

Our students learn from Early Years Foundation Stage 1 to Year 13, that it will take more than top examination scores to enter elite universities or to be successful in the world of work. Hence at SKID, not only do we deliver excellent academic results, we simultaneously focus on developing student leadership and character building.

To be successful leaders in the future, we believe our students need to be able to think “outside the box”, thrive beyond their comfort zone, manage change, make ethical decisions and have high levels of emotional intelligence. Through our curriculum, co-curricular learning and ethos, we equip our students to have all of the skills and values to match these traits of a successful leader.

House Leadership

House Captains - The role of the House Captain is primarily to serve as leadership role models to their fellow students in their Houses, lead the House Key Stage Leaders and to assist the Head of House in the implementation and coordination of House Activities and House-based Competitions.

House Key Stage Leaders - The role of the House Key Stage Leaders is primarily to support the House Captains and Heads of House in the implementation and coordination of House Activities and House-based Competitions.

Prefect Body

We have a strong prefect body led by the Year 11 Head Prefects. The prefects form part of the Prefect Working Groups: Student Council, House Events, Student Ambassadors, Charities and Fundraising, Co-Curricular Learning and XCL Championship. Each working group is responsible for an area of the school and working with a teacher adviser, strives to make a change in the school.

Student Council

Our Student Council is made up of class representatives who are voted in at the beginning of each academic year, and members of the Student Council Prefect working group. The Student Council conducts meetings to discuss areas in which students would like to see improvements and how to put their ideas into practice.

Members of our Student Council serve as ambassadors of the school by leading school tours during Open Days and assisting during Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs). Students in the Charities and Fundraising working group work tirelessly to raise money and awareness during a number of events throughout the year including ReadATon and Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Our main charity partner of the year is voted in by students each year.

Our student exchange programmes, leadership and motivational camps, educational trips and community projects all build confidence and self-esteem. This culminates in a balanced and holistic development of every student.

SKISS Leadership Development Programme

The Leadership Development Programme has been created for Key Stage 4 students to encourage, support and celebrate the development of their leadership skills, in line with the SKIS motto:

“Building Future Leaders since 2003”

All these leadership initiatives enable students to take ownership of their own development and to bring together evidence of this journey in their accredited portfolio.

This portfolio will help our students to stand out in the crowd when applying for university places and career opportunities in the future.

The ability to lead is a multi-faceted skill, so the SKISS Leadership Development Programme charts three key strands of leadership development:

  1. Personal Leadership Development
  2. Service
  3. Achievement

By the end of the programme, students will have had the opportunity to attain Gold Level across the three key strands. In order to do this, they will have to evidence their transition from being a team member, to taking on a specific role of responsibility, through to leading activities or events.

The Eco-School Programme - Club Leadership

Since its inception in 2012 the Eco Schools programme has moved from strength to strength in Sri KDU International School and has developed into one of four schools in Malaysia that holds the prestigious Green Flag.

One of the cornerstones of the programme is to foster and encourage student leadership. The consolidation of the Eco Council has ensured that a number of students have had the opportunity to develop themselves as leaders, individuals and team players. The policy of the council is to have a Year 10 student in charge of the council which then plays an integral role in determining Eco School policies for all stakeholders.

To date there have been 6 presidents of the Eco Council who have been integral in developing the school to a level where Green Flag status was achieved in December 2016.

There have been a number of important achievements as a result of the Eco Schools programme:

  1. Students have implemented an efficient paper recycling programme in the school.
  2. Students have created an Eco Garden from which produce has been used in the canteen.
  3. Students have organised and run three very successful whole-school Eco Days.
  4. Awareness of Ecological and Environmental Issues has been raised significantly through implementation of lessons in the curriculum and through delivery across all Key Stages.
  5. All students have made pledges to improve their impact on the environment.

The Eco Schools programme continues to go from strength to strength. For the first time in 2017 a group of students took part in the FOBISIA environmental conference in Kathmandu, Nepal.

All of these activities and commitments to improving the environment mean that Sri KDU International School is a leader in environmental awareness and it is something that we will continue to improve upon in the future.

In December 2018 the students will once again be looking to cement the schools Green Flag status whilst continuing to strive for a better environment for all.

Leo Club

In line with the Leo Club vision to serve local communities and make an impact in society, SKIS Leo members organise activities towards this vision.

Leo Club projects include collaboration with Leo Clubs from other schools and the National Blood Centre for a Blood Donation campaign, the Leo Carnival and Leo’s on-going recycling initiative. Proceeds help support orphanages and homes for the elderly. The Leos also answer calls for assistance such as work in the animal shelter, PAWS.

People to People International (PTPI) SKID Chapter

Apart of the annual “Christmas Disco” to raise funds for SKID’ chosen charity of the year, members participated in the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). They partnered with EPIC to build tables for the Dignity for Children Foundation’s school. They attended a two-day builders’ workshop where the participants learnt to handle different tools safely and the types of building materials before undertaking the actual project to construct tables. It encouraged the students to be more aware of the needs those less privileged and how their efforts could impact them. PTPI members also organised the SKIS Staff Appreciation Day for the school’s administration, maintenance, security, cleaners and cafeteria staff. They had members to manage food & beverage, photography, finance and games to ensure the event went well. In the process, members learnt about the contributions of the support staff to the school and gained a deeper appreciation for them.

XCL Championship (Student-LED Talent Show)

The XCL Championship is an annual school-wide talent competition organised entirely by the Prefect Board of SKISS, with the objective of providing students a valuable platform to showcase their skills outside the academic fields and to find new talents within themselves. With events ranging from performance and photography to chess and the culinary arts, each and every student has the opportunity to participate and to compete. It is held all through Term 1, with the performing arts culminating in a spectacular live grand final in the last week of term. The XCL Championship would rival any TV talent show!

The Head Boy and Head Girl assume the role of Co-Presidents of the Committee. Assisted by a group of able students, they organise the annual school-wide talent show – The XCL Championship. What better way to develop our students as ‘Building Future Leaders since 2003’ than to give them complete ownership for a whole school event?

Leadership In Lesson

Students learn to become leaders in lessons too. We have class representatives and monitors and throughout the school during lessons, group work is established to encourage all students to take turns to lead in lessons and to collaborate with others. Students take different roles and present conclusions from different points of view. They may persuade, influence or refute, and in the process develop analytical and decision-making skills.

As our pedagogy is built upon “Building Learning Power”, all lessons are designed to develop at least one of the four learning habits: Resilience, Reciprocity, Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness. Students understand that by practising these four learning habits, they will achieve more.

    Jiro Takahashi

    QUALIFICATION
    • MBA – The University of Texas, Austin – Business Administration

    Jiro Takahashi is the Group Chief Financial Officer at XCL Education, having joined in April 2024. He oversees the Group’s financial strategy, including the development of financial and tax strategies, directing strategic business plans, and enhancing financial and management reporting systems. He is also responsible for maintaining key relationships and leading the finance team to support business growth and operational excellence across all markets.

    Jiro brings substantial financial leadership experience across the Asia Pacic region, specializing in corporate finance. Before joining XCL Education, he was the Chief Financial Officer for OCS Group UK, a global facility services provider, where he led the finance function across Asia Pacic, initiating strategies that significantly enhanced the region’s profitability and strategic positioning. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for Thailand and corporate development for Asia Pacic at Laureate International Universities, overseeing the company’s financial strategy and contributing to the financial success of Laureate and its institutions. Earlier in his career, Jiro held multiple finance roles of increasing responsibilities with Yum Brands in the US and Asia Pacic.

    With over 20 years of experience in financial management, Jiro holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from The University of Texas at Austin. He has a proven track record of leading financial transformations, implementing robust financial controls, and aligning financial practices with organizational goals.

  • At the Secondary level, KELAS KAFA MENENGAH (KKM) provides specialized support for students to excel in Pendidikan Islam within the KSSM syllabus. Our dedicated teachers offer comprehensive instruction and guidance, ensuring that students not only achieve academic success but also deepen their understanding of Islamic principles and values, preparing them to become responsible and ethical individuals in society.

  • Intensive Chinese Language Programme (ICLP) 汉语强化课程

    This entry-level co-curricular programme is designed for those new to the Chinese language and aims to intensively build upon what students learn in their mainstream language curricula.

  • English-Chinese Primary Programme (ECP) 英汉小学课程

    The programme employs a co-teaching model with one English-speaking class teacher and one Chinese-speaking co-teacher, offering an excellent opportunity for learners to master both English and Chinese through a Content and Language Integrated Learning approach. It enables our students to achieve true bilingual proficiency within the renowned British National Curriculum framework.

    Anthony is the Chief Executive Officer of XCL Education Malaysia. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Christ Church, University of Oxford. After leaving Oxford, Anthony worked in the City of London in public, media and analyst relations. A passion for English Literature and life-long learning led him to being asked to work first as a teacher as part of the reforms at a school in Bolton and then to Trinity College, University of Cambridge to train as an English teacher in 2002.

    He has worked at a number of schools in Cambridgeshire, England, including pastoral leadership and leading the internationally renowned English and media faculty across the Parkside Federation of academies in Cambridge. Anthony joined the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) in 2010 to support the improvement of Nene Park Academy, where he worked as Assistant Principal leading on the development of the sixth form, literacy, English as an additional language, special needs and latterly as the Vice Principal with responsibility for the curriculum, timetable and student achievement throughout the academy. In July 2014, Anthony was appointed as Principal of Stamford Welland Academy with the brief to deliver the ‘Stamford Free School’ vision. During his time here, the school secured its best examination results and Ofsted inspection judgment in its history. In September 2017, he became CMAT’s Executive Director of Education responsible for the quality assurance of all the academies and teacher professional development from initial teacher training to leadership succession planning and development.

    In February 2019, Anthony joined GEMS as the Principal of GEMS International School Tropicana Metropark, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Whilst completing a Masters with UCL Institute of Education, Anthony conducted research into and published on the teaching of literacy. He is a frequent conference speaker, presenting on school leadership and English teaching and editor of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ in the Cambridge University Press Cambridge School Shakespeare series. Anthony believes in a whole education striving for academic excellence and great examination results, whist providing the experiences and building the character skills that student need to thrive in learning, work and life. In his spare time, Anthony enjoys travel, film, theatre, music, singing, running, and exercise.

    Marcel Van Miert is a Senior Advisor to TPG in Southeast Asia. Marcel has almost 3 decades of extensive experience working exclusively in the education sector.

    Prior to TPG, Marcel served as the Executive Chairman of Vietnam Australia International School (VAS) for ~8 years. Prior to VAS, Marcel spent 4 years as the Group CEO of WCL Group, a PE-backed school chain now part of Nord Anglia, and 3 years as the Managing Director of the Schools Division at Nord Anglia.

    Marcel has also served several other education companies in multiple capacities including Sommet Education (a network of hospitality schools), VUS (English Language Training Centers), EBS London (UK’s first private accredited Business School), INK Education, Sri KDU Schools, and Europreneur Consultants.

    Marcel received a Bachelor’s in Arts from Regent’s University London and MBA from Henley Business School in the UK.

    Gilles Mahe is the Group CEO of XCL Education. Gilles has worked in leadership roles across a multitude of sectors in Asia since 2000 and has spent ~20 years leading organizations and managing operations in Asia Pacific. He brings with him deep experience managing large service-oriented organizations, where he had the privilege of building diverse teams, working with passionate people, and nurturing a culture of collaboration and excellence.

    Gilles has ~7 years of extensive experience working in the education sector. Gilles was the Thailand & Myanmar CEO of Laureate International Universities, the world’s leading higher education provider, where he built and expanded Laureate’s activities in Southeast Asia. As the CEO, Gilles was instrumental in expanding Laureate’s presence in new geographies, launching innovative offline and online programs, turning around universities, scaling existing universities, and expanding the reputation and credibility of the overall group in Southeast Asia. As a father of three, he is a firm believer in the transformative power of education and the significant roles that schools play in shaping the lives of students and preparing them for what comes next.

    Prior to XCL Education, Gilles was the Asia Pacific CEO for OCS Group, the world’s largest family-owned facilities management services company. At OCS, he played a pivotal role in building out the leadership team, executing the commercial transformation of the business, and acquiring & integrating other facilities management businesses. He has also served as the Managing Director for Asia and Vice President for APAC of Sodexo Group, a Fortune Global 500 company that is the leading provider of Food and Facilities Management services.

    Gilles holds dual Post-graduate degrees in Business & Finance and Philosophy from the University of Paris-La Sorbonne in France.

    • Ensure that the science labs and science preparation room are in good and proper order.
    • Maintain/upgrade the conditions and facilities/infrastructure of respective labs.
    • Maintenance check on all lab facilities.
    • Check that the fume cupboards, emergency eyewash station, drench shower, water ionizer, gas pipes/taps, refrigerator, first aid kit (replenish if necessary) and etc are properly maintained.
    • Prepare/replenish bench solutions and ensure that the bottles are properly labeled and stored.
    • Preparation of laboratory materials, equipment before lessons.
    • Maintenance of laboratory records such as:
    • Update on the records of price list for lab material;
    • Laboratory facilities maintenance schedule upon completion of maintenance check;
    • Laboratory stock inventory record upon issuance, receipt or write-off of items.

    We visited numerous international schools in Klang-Valley and Sri KDU Subang Jaya was not even on our list. Reason being it is way out of our travelling radius. However, we are glad we made the visit to the school before our final call, and it was the best decision ever!
